The problem with the magical girl genre is the entire thing is so similar that it sort of blends into this glittering mass. This means that the legitimately great stories are lost in the sea of other, less great magical girl stories.
Sugar Sugar Rune came from the golden age of magical girls, and unfortunately got lost in the mass for many. Now it just remains a especially niche series that only the diehard mahou shoujo fan discovers.

Where To Start The Sugar Sugar Rune Manga After The Anime?
Sugar Sugar Rune is one of those “similar, yet different” anime adaptations of its manga source material, as was not too uncommon back when it was made in ye old 2005. So, throughout the anime, you will see the same basic story line with certain parts expanded on in the anime and other parts from the manga completely omitted. These changes all culminate in the ending being similar, but also wildly different between the anime and manga.
It is generally recommended to read the Sugar Sugar Rune manga from the beginning. It tells a much darker story and the artwork, as is usually the case with shoujo, looks a lot better in manga form.
However, if you don’t much care for the minimal differences, but do want to see the true canon ending, you can technically start at the last “canon” event present in the anime. Episode 42 details Chocolat being trapped in the Forgotten Cave with Pierre, which would be Chapter 24 in the manga. So you could start there and pretty quickly read your way to the end as only 19 chapters remain.
Is The Sugar Sugar Rune Manga Over?
The Sugar Sugar Rune manga is complete. The manga ended in 2007 with Chapter 46.
