The fact that this series is often titled SA has not aged well, has it? Regardless, it is one of the more fine shoujo romances of its time for all the ways that it both keeps and breaks from traditions.

Where To Start The Special A Manga After The Anime?
If you finished the Special A anime and wish to continue the story in the manga, you can start at Volume 7, Chapter 40.
Much of everything past Episode 19 is anime-original. The Special A anime skips heaps of chapters, and it would be best to read it from the beginning.
What to Expect From The Special A Manga?
While the Special A anime is enjoyable in its own right, it does skip some significant things from the manga. The anime condenses and cuts out various character development/arcs for a number of the side characters, which means it skips a not-insignificant amount of chapters, often replacing them with anime-original filler.
Because these character arcs and development are still ongoing and important at the point where the anime ends, it really merits reading the manga from the beginning so you can enjoy the full story. The side characters are well integrated in the plot, and by missing huge chunks of their ongoing character arcs, you will be missing information that makes the manga story harder to jump into.
