When I really enjoy a series, I generally can articulate why that is, but I absolutely fell in love with Rose of Versailles and I could not tell you why. I got so invested in those sweet little revolutionaries marching towards tragedy, and I suppose that is the specific brand of Riyoko Ikeda witch magic that this well-aged series still so beloved to this day.

Where To Start The Rose of Versailles Manga After The Anime?
If you finished the Rose of Versailles anime and wish to continue the story with the manga, you can start at Volume 10, Chapter 55.
The main story is, given how it ended, of course concluded, but there is a series of side stories that follow that were released in 2013 long after the main series is done.
Rose of Versailles 2025 Movie:
The 2025 Rose of Versailles movie is a very, very abridged adaptation of the anime/manga story. It covers the same story and ends a similar way, but it is essentially just summarizing a number of the major plot points. It is also, strangely enough, a musical.
The the Du Barry rivalry is visually summarized in a song, the black knight story is omitted, and Rosalie is on screen for all of five seconds. If the movie was your first experience with the series, watch the anime or read the manga for a much better experience.
What to Expect From The Rose of Versailles Manga?
The Rose of Versailles anime and manga don’t really differ in the core story it is telling, but there are definitely a lot of very small differences between them.
In the beginning, the anime pads out a fair bit of “the early years” between Oscar and Marie with some filler plots. However, the manga is the exact opposite. It has a more compact story in the beginning and pads things out more with various side stories as it goes on.
Most of what was cut from the Rose of Versailles anime from the manga is side stories. Essentially, the anime cut out any side story that wasn’t serving the main story. Perhaps it is more accurate to say that if the side story wouldn’t eventually involve Oscar, it wasn’t included.
While it isn’t necessary to read the Rose of Versailles manga from the beginning after the anime, you will definitely find a lot of differences between them that actually does make reading the story from the beginning feel pretty new. The manga is also a lot more entertainingly dramatic about many things and does the ending a bit better (though it remains the same).
Is The Rose of Versailles Manga Over?
The Rose of Versailles manga ended in 1972 with Volume 10, Chapter 54. However, an additional four volumes were released in 2013, which means it now ends at Volume 14, Chapter 82.
These four additional volumes are different from Rose of Versailles Gaiden, a two-volume series of even more Rose of Versailles side stories.
You can also read The Glory of Napoleon – Heroic (Eikou no Napoleon – Eroica), which is a sequel manga to Rose of Versailles in that it takes place in a follow up time period of France AND that characters like Alain, Bernard, and Rosalie make appearances in the story as supporting characters.
Will There Be More Rose of Versailles Anime?
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the series, it was announced that Rose of Versailles would receive a new movie by Mappa, which is to air January 31st, 2025. No further word on any more Tales of Versailles anime projects have been announced, nor should you really expect any.
