Okami-san and Her Seven Companions is a bit of a mess as an adaptation of the light novel. While each novel has a general overall story to it, they are often unrelated to each other outside of the linear progression of Okami and Ryoshi’s relationship.

So what the Okami-san and Her Seven Companions anime did is adapt parts of some stories, then stitch in parts of other stories as well as jump around the content of nearly the entire novel series.

This means it would be near impossible to just jump in at a certain novel and not miss quite a bit. So you really have to read Okami-san and Her Seven Companions from the beginning as the light novels are a “similar, but different” affair compared to the anime.

Furthermore, as Okami and Ryoshi’s building relationship is really the charm of this series, the anime cut out a lot of the moments of character growth, particularly for Ryoshi, that leads to a stronger romantic story than the anime really displayed.
