While I’d still call this anime a good adaptation of the light novel story, this anime does trim off a number of small details—some of them because they are keeping the gore rather low, the series is actually rather brutal—that add a lot more flavor to the story and sometimes flesh out the world building a bit more.

I take your meaning about the “without tons of fiddling around” when it comes to Light getting his revenge, but i still found the pace in a majority of the episodes to be annoyingly slow. The characters would frequently spend such long stretches of time talking about what they were going to do, to a degree i kept wanting to tell them ‘will you get on with it already’ as such a bunch of the episodes felt like they had very little progress. Maybe that was just because i was waiting week to week, perhaps its better for those that straight binged it.
That’s extremely fair, but it is definitely a change in pace from “I’m getting my revenge on all these people,” then taking an entire season to plan and take out a single person.
That is the realistic approach to storytelling, but I like that this series did try to be a bit more expedient with the process, even if it isn’t doing anything ground-breaking with the time it is saving, lol.
Definitely agree with that. Of the eight targets, knocking out two in season 1 is pretty good progress compared to others.
Other anime MC’s have gotten sidetracked, sidequested, sidestoried, waylaid, or straight up seemingly forgotten their goal, only then to decide on forgiveness instead of vengeance. so yeah, while the anime and story is not without its flaws, the pros outweigh the cons enough to make it enjoyable watch even if doesn’t reach ‘all time favorite’ levels.
