I still remember the days of Haruhi mania – and the Endless Eight riots – but those days are long gone now. Now, the series slumbers its way into obscurity, but not without having left a large mark on anime.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of those series you watch and never really forget because of the unique storytelling and the spin it put on such common situations.

Where To Start The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Light Novel After The Anime?
If you finished The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime (both seasons and the movie) and wish to continue the story with the light novel, you can technically start at Novel 7.
However, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya tells the light novel story often wildly out of order, and sometimes quite badly. I strongly recommend reading The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya light novels from the beginning due to the story already being so complicated and the anime leaving out a lot of details.
If nothing else, start at Novel 4 because the anime really does speed through novels four through six particularly quickly.
Is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Light Novel Over?
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is still ongoing. Since launching in 2003, the light novel entered a sort of limbo in 2011, released a compilation of stories as Novel 12 in 2020, and is going to release a new novel in November 2024. So the release schedule isn’t great or predictable like many other series.
Where To Start The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Manga After The Anime?
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has two manga series. Make sure you are picking the one with Noiji Itou and Gaku Tsugano as artists, not the single-volume, discontinued manga with Makoto Mizuno as the artist.
With that hurdle overcome, you can start the The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya manga after The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya movie (and both seasons of anime) at Chapter 49.
The anime adapts all but the finale chapter of Volume 9.
If you finished the The Disappearance of Yuki Nagato anime, you can pick up the corresponding The Disappearance of Yuki Nagato spin-off manga at Chapter 39.
The anime adapts through Volume 5.
Is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Manga Over?
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya manga is complete. It ended in 2013 with Chapter 105.
The Disappearance of Yuki Nagato manga is also complete. It ended in 2016 with Chapter 79.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Spin-Offs
Like any complicated, plot-dense light novel series, Haruhi has spawned a number of interesting spin-offs that you may wish to check out.
- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya-chan (Manga, Complete) – 4-koma manga where everyone is chibi and even more crazy than in the base series. Also has some segments cherry-picked and adapted in the ONA short-form series of the same name.
- Nyoron Churuya-san (Manga, Complete) – 4-Koma manga about a chibi Tsuruya trying – and failing – to get her favorite food. Also has an ONA short-form series of the same name.
- The Intrigue of Itsuki Koizumi (Manga, Complete) – Koizumi hijinks
- The Misfortune of Kyon and Koizumi (Manga, Complete) – Short series about the hijinks of the boys in the SOS Brigade
- The Disappearance of Yuki Nagato (Manga, Complete) – Spin-off about Yuki, also has an anime.
Will There Be A The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Season 3?
There has been no official announcement of a The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Season 3 anime.
Haruhi really hurt itself as a series with the Endless Eight, but it is a series with a interesting sort of enduring popularity. So, who knows? For any other series, a third season would be near impossible at this point, but for Haruhi, it could happen.
