Magician’s Academy is very much a parody of tropes that have long since been put to bed, so it’s not really a serious story, and they didn’t adapt it as a serious story. That said, the anime really took the main plot points of the novels and adapted them with a dollop of its own adaptational creativity on top.

The anime skipped a lot of smaller moments and jokes from the light novel, opting instead to sometimes just insert their own original ones. Did you adore Magician’s Academy? The light novels have more of that right from the beginning.

You definitely don’t need to read the Magician’s Academy light novels from the beginning to be able to continue the story, but you would get more of what you loved if you did.
