This series was so overlooked that even I, someone who watches ten tons of anime yearly for my job, didn’t watch it until only recently. I wonder why so many eschew it. It’s a solid story and it has a nice artistic style to it. I’m all ears if someone can solve that particular mystery.
Anyway, as for where Laughing Under the Clouds leaves off in the manga, it actually adapts all of the main story manga, but as the anime leaves you feeling, there is a lot more to this world than the main story.
You have some options if you wish to do extra reading and explore the Laughing Under The Clouds world more.
- Laughing Under The Clouds Gaiden – This is a series of short stories that take place both in the past and several that happen after the events of the main story for more closure. These have movie adaptations.
- Laughing in Purgatory (Rengoku ni Warau) – Takes place 300 years prior to the main story
- Laughing in the Fog (Utakata no Warau) – Best read after Gaiden and Rengoku since it has a connection to both.
There is also Laughing During Overtime at Yamainu, but that’s a gag comedy about the Yamainu squad.
