Where To Start The Kimba the White Lion Manga After The Anime?

If you finished the Kimba the White Lion anime (any of the them), you can start the manga at Chapter 1.

None of the anime projects strictly adapt the Kimba the White Lion manga in any sort of way, though some do get close in various ways.

As Kimba the White Lion has appeared in several anime iterations, let’s list them out and I’ll talk about how they compare to the manga.

Kimba the White Lion (1965 TV)

The Kimba the White Lion manga makes significant time jumps throughout the series, having Leo (Kimba) grow up and have children—this anime just focuses on his childhood. The 1965 anime does take some storylines from early in the manga, but just pretty much focuses on expanding Leo’s childhood and softens the manga’s darker themes, since this is an anime aimed at children.

Kimba the White Lion (1966 Movie)

This was a re-edit of the original 1965 TV anime. It was re-cut to be a good movie, not a better adaptation of the manga story.

Leo the Lion (1966 TV)

Sequel to the original TV series, this version focuses on Leo all grown up with kids. While it does have more mature themes, Leo the Lion stars to differ from the manga in that it really kind of stops following Leo as it goes on and starts following Lune/Rune, his son, as he grows up.

The New Adventures of Kimba the White Lion (1989 TV)

The New Adventures of Kimba the White Lion is darker than the original TV anime and far more dramatic—but an even worse adaptation of the manga story. This series also stretches out Leo’s childhood arc again and its story doesn’t really have any resemblance to the manga or even the original 1965 anime.

Jungle Emperor Leo: Symphonic Poem (1991 OVA)

This is the first episode of the original anime in symphonic poem form.

Jungle Emperor Leo (1997 Movie)

This movie is probably the closest thing to adapting the end of the original manga. Not only is the movie darker, but its storyline, while not strictly adapting the final arc of the manga, strongly mirrors it in plot (the jungle disease and trying to fix it). The ending is different from the manga, but at least has the same tone as it.

Kimba the White Lion (2009 Movie)

The Kimba 2009 movie is yet again another interpretation of the manga story that is wildly different from the original manga as well as all of the other anime iterations. It is futuristic and set in an artificially created jungle.

Is The Kimba the White Lion Manga Over?

The Kimba the White Lion manga is complete. It ended in 1954 with Volume 3, Chapter 23.

You can also enjoy the Leo-chan manga, which is an alternative version of the story about Leo being sent to live with a family in Japan. It is more aimed at children. It ended in 1967 with Volume 1, Chapter 16.
