While the Journal with Witch started off extremely faithfully adapting the manga, as it went on, the anime did start to skip things. This culminates in a final episode that speeds through the chapters it is covering pretty quickly.

The issue is that some of that content is both emotionally interesting and somewhat important to some character arcs. The anime is actually mostly a good adaptation, so you don’t really need to read it from the beginning unless you just want to, but I would recommend starting closer to Chapter 28 as the anime cut pretty much all of Asa’s dad’s story.
