I’m noticing a trend that ecchi anime adaptations are usually not so well received by the fans of the original source material. At least it is not a Rosario + Vampire affair where the ecchi was added into the anime.

High School DxD is one of those anime series that starts off strong, but becomes less of a good adaptation as it goes on. Season 3 was particularly bad. While you don’t necessarily need to read the High School DxD light novels from the beginning, you may actually wish to start instead at Novel 5, which is where Season 3 starts.
