In the end, it really actually wasn’t as complicated as all that. That’s what I took away from the original manga.

Where To Start The Ghost in the Shell Manga After The Anime?
Prior to the faithful 2026 Ghost in the Shell series, only two other anime series in the Ghost in the Shell line even remotely tried to adapt the manga. Those being the original Ghost in the Shell (1995) movie and the sequel move, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004).
- The Ghost in the Shell (1995) movie adapts select chapters from the original Ghost in the Shell manga. Chapters skipped include 2, 4, 6, 7, and 12.
- Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004) adapts Chapter 6 from the original manga, but makes significant changes to it throughout.
As it skips much, you would want to read the original Ghost in the Shell manga by Shirow Masamune from the beginning. The original Ghost in the Shell manga is one volume, but it does have the one volume Human Error Processor sequel manga and the eight volume The Human Algorithm sequel manga series.
Please note that the Ghost in the Shell manga is actually quite different in tone from the anime. Expect the manga to be less serious with more occasional light-heartedness and to be far less philosophical about the setting. The Ghost in the Shell manga is still a serious story, but not nearly as serious as the anime makes it.
The rest of the Ghost in the Shell anime—Stand Alone Complex, SAC_2045, Arise, ect—are all unrelated to the original manga BUT some anime stories were adapted to manga.

- Ghost in the Shell:SAC by Kinutani Yuu adapts the anime story, but does expand on some of the stories in individual episodes.
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is a series for three light novels by Fujisaki Junichi that are just side stories set in the world.
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – The Laughing Man by Kinutani Yuu adapts the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – The Laughing Man (2005) anime.
- Ghost in the Shell – S.A.C. – Tachikoma na Hibi is a comedy manga set in the Stand Alone Complex setting.
- Ghost in the Shell Arise – Sleepless Eye by Fujisaki Junichi adapts the Arise OVAs.
Ghost in the Shell (2026)
Though not the Ghost in the Shell people are used to, like it or not, the Ghost in the Shell 2026 anime series was the most faithful to the manga.
If you finished the Ghost in the Shell 2026 anime and want to continue the story in the manga, you can start at Volume 2, Chapter 12. (AKA Chapter 1 of the Human-Error Processor sequel series)
While Ghost in the Shell 2026 was far more faithful to the manga with its tone, it does have some issues. The anime was very quickly paced compared to the manga, so a lot of small aspects did not get adapted or were condensed. The anime also “fictionalized” some of the faction names, making it harder to follow at times.
Is The Ghost in the Shell Manga Over?
The Ghost in the Shell manga is complete.
- Ghost in the Shell ended in 1990 with Volume 1, Chapter 11.
- Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human Error Processor ended in 1996 with Volume 1, Chapter 7
- Ghost in the Shell 2: The Human Algorithm ended in 2025 with Volume 8, Chapter 108.
Will There Be A Ghost in the Shell Season 2?
There has been no official announcement as to Ghost in the Shell 2026 continuing the story.
Vol 1 numbers all chapters, including the prologue, making the epilogue Chapter 12. Both the 1995 film and 2026 anime directly end on it. The film has no material from Chapter 2 (Super Spartan), the very short Chapter 4 (Megatech Machine 1), or Chapter 7 (Phantom Fund). Solely Chapter 6 (Robot Rondo) went into the 2004 film but most adapted chapters in the films are heavily changed or only carry over scenes.
The 2026 anime is slower-paced, using 10 episodes for a 340-page manga. One of the slowest rates for a modern anime. The first and last acts even feature filler, most notably in episodes 3 and 8. The manga is simply like this. The only things missing are a few jokes, nudity, gore, profanity, and actual country names. The adaptation speed isn’t the problem. The self-contained chapters in episodes 1–3 and 7–10 always bleed a few pages into the next episode, making the show feel less like the anthology that the manga is.
Human Error Processor is Vol. 1.5, and Man Machine Interface is Vol. 2. Both are one-volume sequels from the 90s. The 8-volume The Human Algorithm is Vol. 1.75. It isn’t written or drawn by Shirow, but uses his setting and flippant style (the only manga to do so). Section 9 without Motoko on cases around the world, written by one of the Arise writers. Pandora in the Crimson Shell and now 2026’s Glitch Witch are direct and official prequels to the original GitS canon, with Shirow involved in the writing and designs.
