You find Hiroyuki Sawano bangers in the strangest places. This time being a pretty okay Chinese anime with above averagely good animation that is both good quality and also – more impressively – consistently good quality. Inconsistent animation quality being something many other donghua suffer from.
Regardless, while this is some lovely power fantasy, it was interesting to see some of China’s dragon mythology explored more deeply in a fantasy story.

What to Expect From The Dragon Raja Source Material Compared to The Anime?
The Dragon Raja is a fairly good anime adaptation, at least as far as Chinese donghua adaptions go. They skip a lot of info dump material about the world that was present in the first novel, but nothing that they can’t slip in as needed in later seasons.
While you would definitely get a lot more details and generally a better paced story experience if you read the series from the beginning, it isn’t strictly necessary.
