Perhaps shocking no one, it’s very hard to pick up the manga for a wildly long-running anime series because the stories become so muddied up by creative directions.

Where To Start The Doraemon Manga After The Anime?
Doraemon (1973)
While Doraemon first premiered in anime form in 1973, and the 1973 anime does keep fairly close with the manga, the original 1973 Doraemon anime is not complete simply because not all of the episodes have been preserved.
Much of this Doraemon anime series became lost media. As some episodes are lost and some episodes are anime-original stories, it is impossible to say where this anime exactly leaves off in the Doraemon manga.
Furthermore, the 1973 anime appears to make wild leaps throughout the manga, but in truth the manga took anime-original stories from this series and the author would later adapt them into canon in the manga.
As there are also some significant changes to specific characters and their situations, so it would be advised to read the Doraemon manga from the beginning if you were a fan of this specific anime.
Doraemon (1979)
There are 1787 episodes of the Doraemon 1979 anime, and there are 821 chapters of manga. While most Doraemon chapters made it into the 1979 anime at some point, do note that most of those chapters were changed.
The Doraemon manga was often a more serious story with emotional and even dark moments while Doraemon 1979 often lengthened or changed stories to makes them a little more palatable for children and give the endings some sort of moral lesson to them.
Furthermore, Doraemon 1979 ran from 1979 to 2005. During this time, it underwent a lot of creative directions and changes which alter the anime in some significant ways away from the manga as well as evolve its art and storytelling styles.
Like with the 1973 anime, there is no good place to pick up the Doraemon manga after watching the 1979 anime. Most of the stories had been adapted, but changed, and the best option is to, again, read the Doraemon manga from the beginning.
Doraemon (2005)
Doraemon was reborn in the modern era in 2005 and has continued the brave tradition of continuing to be a very long-running anime.
While Doraemon 2005 does stick closer to the manga in the beginning, as its still ongoing, the anime has also started to adapt anime-original stories as well.
Do note that Doraemon 2005 may stick closer to the manga, but it still makes numerous changes to it as well. It still remains a beloved, child-friendly show and the answer as to where to start the manga after it still remains to read the Doraemon manga from the beginning.
Doraemon Movies
Reading the above might make this easy to guess, but most Doraemon movies are original stories. Though, many take inspiration from various manga chapters.
You can find a number of Doraemon movie stories, particularly movies made after 2005, in the Doraemon Long Tales manga and the Doraemon Movie Stories manga (Movies Stories in particular adapts the post-2005 movies).
Is The Doraemon Manga Over?
The Doraemon manga is complete. It ended in 1996 with Volume 45, Chapter 821.
The manga ended with the author’s death, so it does not have a conclusive ending.
Doraemon Spin-Off Manga
Doraemon is immortal. Doraemon is Japan’s anime ambassador. That is how important this cat robot is. So here I’m going to try to wrangle up as manga Doraemon manga that aren’t actually just crossovers with other series, but I am likely to miss some. Please forgive my very human flaws.
Also, be aware that the Doraemon is sometimes released in “themed” collections (Horror Collection, Dinosaur Collection, Romance Collection, ect) which are just chapters from the original manga grouped up to fit said themes.
- Doraemon Long Tales (Complete, 24 Volumes) – Longer Doraemon stories that span a volume instead of a chapter. Does adapt some movie stories, and some movies adapt Long Stories stories as well.
- Doraemon Movie Stories (Complete, 7 Volumes) – Long Stories reborn for the 2005 Doraemon series to adapt the movie stories which often lack any manga connection. Stories also span individual volumes rather than chapters.
- Doraemon+ (Complete, 6 Volumes, 125 Chapters) – Contains Doraemon chapters that were not published with the original release of Doraemon. (Officially there are 800-ish chapters, but there are actually over 1,000)
- The Doraemons (Complete, 6 Volumes) – Follows Doraemon and other Doraemons from the Robot Academy
- Doraemon Super Baseball Gaiden (Dorabase) (Complete, 23 Volumes, 134 Chapters) – Legally not Doraemon playing baseball. It’s a baseball manga story.
- Shin Dorabase (Complete, 4 Volumes) – A brief sequel to Dorabase.
- Doraemon 0 (Complete, 1 Volume) – All six of Doraemon’s origin stories. Allegedly.
