When it comes to sports anime that is about more the sport rather than any other personal character drama, you can have Prince of Tennis-style or you can have Baby Steps-style. You can have extinction-level event meteor ball smashes or you you can have a detailed, realistic progression at the sport. As these two sort of sports anime styles are so different, it is what made people take to Baby Steps.
The series really details a realistic climb from nothing into a sport – and does so in a way that grabs you. There are a lot of reasons to enjoy sports anime, but the amount of sports anime that really focus on the sport in a realistic light is a surprisingly small pool, and Baby Steps helped pave the way for other series that do just that.
