The Asterisk War had the unfortunate fate of having to compete with a lot of other series that had extremely similar sort of plots that all aired around the same time. However, while it was deemed one of the less desirable of the lot, age has made Asterisk War look a lot better even if it still never differentiated itself much from the other, similar series it was competing with.

If you finished both seasons of The Asterisk War anime and want to continue the story with the light novel, you can start the light novel after Season 2 at Novel 7.
That said, there are small changes to the story by the end of the – otherwise pretty diligent – anime, so it is strongly recommended to read Novel 6 before continuing on. Other than that, there is no reason to read The Asterisk War light novels from the beginning unless you want to.
