Where To Start The Akira Manga After The Movie?
TL;DR – There is no firm “start at this chapter” point for the Akira manga after watching the movie. Due to the condensed nature of the movie, it is necessary to read the Akira manga from the beginning.
If you watched the Akira movie and were hoping to just jump into the manga, there is really no good place to do so. When the Akira movie was being drafted in 1987, the author was penning both the movie and the fourth volume of his six-volume manga series. This means the anime movie only really covers events from the first half of the manga with also a few moments from the end of the manga – but the manga overall provides a far more complex, dark, and gripping story experience.
The anime movie adapts the first book of the manga fairly well while taking pieces from the second and third volumes as well as the final volume. However, the movie is a highly condensed version of even the first three volumes, which are very long in and of themselves. It cuts out a ton of major characters whose stories would not be presents in the movie, but who will play a role later in the manga. This makes it very difficult to “jump into the manga” because you will be missing a lot of key information.
Furthermore, while you will have seen elements of the Akira manga ending in the movie, do note that the manga ending is pretty different. It is speculated that the author wrote both the movie and manga endings to be different and enjoyed separately of each other.
Is The Akira Manga Over?
The Akira manga is complete. It ended in 1990 with Chapter 120.
