Muv-Luv is a series of visual novels that came out in 2003. While it often trades places with Steins;Gate, the third visual novel in the trilogy, Muv-Luv Alternative, is one of the most popular visual novels of all time.
However, Muv-Luv may be a hit among frequent visual novel readers, but in the anime world, Muv-Luv is nonsensical, if not intriguing.
If you know Muv-Luv by its anime adaptations alone, you barely know anything about Muv-Luv at all.

Muv-Luv Alternate Compared To The Visual Novels
Honestly, the best way to experience the Muv-Luv storyline (in the visual novels) is going in blind the first time. This makes it so strange that the Muv-Luv anime is so not conducive to that experience.
The Muv-Luv series is, primarily, a trilogy of visual novels that explores an increasingly complex universe, or rather, a series of alternate universes.
These main visual novels include:
- Muv-Luv Extra
- Muv-Luv Unlimited
- Muv-Luv Alternative
The Muv-Luv anime, Muv-Luv Alternative, is an adaptation of the third game in the Muv-Luv trilogy. In Muv-Luv Extra and Muv-Luv Unlimited, packaged as two sides of the same game, you watch a story shift from the pleasant rom-com presented in Muv-Luv Extra to a, alternate timeline coming-of-age story in Unlimited where the world is in conflict with the BETA, but the characters aren’t involved. Finally, in Muv-Luv Alternative, you see those same characters ultimately fighting in an alien invasion war against BETA.
This why the Muv-Luv Alternative anime feels so strange, and why it never really builds out its characters too deeply. You are, by this point in the game trilogy, already supposed to fundamentally know these characters and their relationships with each other.
In short, the Muv-Luv Alternative anime is fan service for people that played the game. You get to see the cool fight scenes limited by the static images that the visual novel provides come fully to life on the screen.
What is Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse?
Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse is a spin-off of Muv-Luv Alternative, not a prequel or sequel to the Alternative anime. In fact, the Total Eclipse anime was made in 2012, long before the Muv-Luv Alternative anime in 2021.
While Muv-Luv Alternative, the anime, is adapted from the visual novel. Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse started as a light novel spin-off series that received an anime adaptation and only afterwards did it get a visual novel adaptation of the story.
The potentially confusing thing about Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse is that the timeline it takes place in changes between the media. The light novels and the anime that adapted them take place in Unlimited’s timeline while the visual novel and manga takes place in Alternative’s timeline.
That said, its timeline doesn’t actually make much of a difference since, while Unlimited isn’t about fighting the BETA, that fight is still taking place in the world. As Total Eclipse follows fully new characters, the timeline effects the story minimally.
For the versions that do take place in the Alternative’s timeline, the story is actually a prequel to the events in Alternative in some respects.
How is Schwarzesmarken Related to Muv-Luv?
Before Muv-Luv Alternative got an anime adaptation, Schwarzesmarken, a spin-off set in the Muv-Luv universe, was created.
You can fully enjoy Schwarzesmarken as an anime series independently of Muv-Luv lore. Many people did when it first came out. It uses separate characters and takes place long before the events of Muv-Luv Alternative, which is the timeline it is set in.
However, by having knowledge of Muv-Luv, you will pick up a variety of little lore details in the story above and beyond the fact that both anime series are about fighting BETA.
Like Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse, Schwarzesmarken started as a series of light novels. It was then adapted into a 2-part visual novel, and finally it received an anime adaptation.
The first Schwarzesmarken visual novel is the story from the first three light novels. The second visual novel is more focused on the individual stories of different girls in its three routes – the Kadia route, the Irisdina route, and the Lise route – as they play out the plot of the light novels.
The Schwarzesmarken anime follows the Kadia route, ultimately adapting the story of all seven Schwarzesmarken light novels in a extremely loose way.
As you can completely consume Schwarzesmarken without any Muv-Luv knowledge, if you have an interest, you definitely should read the light novel from the beginning or play the visual novels. Schwarzesmarken never received a manga adaptation.
How to Enjoy Muv-Luv in a Way That Makes Sense
If you want to get into Muv-Luv, and are willing to play the visual novels, “getting into” the series is really quite simple. It is as simple as:
- Play Muv-Luv (Extra and Unlimited are packaged together in this simply titled game) – Unlimited is unlocked after beating the two main heroine routes in Extra.
- Play Muv-Luv Alternative
From there, you have a variety of spin-off games you can explore depending on your level of commitment. These include:
- Muv-Luv Alternative Chronicles – Side stories in the Alternative and Unlimited universes that are either alternative outcomes to story events or new stories – both of which expand upon the characters. While they were originally fandiscs, they have been chopped up and officially distributed as the three individual visual novels Photonflowers, Photonmelodies, and The Day After
- Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse – Visual novel adaptation of the light novel it was based on. Unlike the light novel and anime, the visual novel takes place in Alternative’s timeline. However, as it follows new characters, the timeline makes very little difference.
- Schwarzesmarken – Visual novel adaptation of the light novel story it was based on. Separated into 2 parts – Blood-stained Crest and The Martyrs.
Now, when it comes to spin-offs and/or light novel and manga adaptations, this is where Muv-Luv gets extra tricky.
- Muv-Luv (AKA Muv-Luv Extra) (Manga, Complete) – Manga adaptation of Muv-Luv Extra’s Sumika route, adapting only one of the two routes. Includes events from other routes and changes details of the game.
- Muv-Luv Unlimited (Manga, Complete) – Adapts the Muv-Luv Unlimited story and the Meiya route, one of five routes. It omits the details of the other routes and expands on some scenes in the visual novel.
- Muv-Luv Alternative (Manga, Complete) – Adapts the Muv-Luv Alternative visual novel story, which has no routes. The Muv-Luv manga changes a lot of scenes and introduces new moments to greatly expand on the characters. You will see many of those additions in the anime adaptation.
- Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse (Light Novel, Manga, Complete) – A spin-off of Alternative that follows different characters. The light novels take place in Unlimited’s timeline while the manga takes place in Alternative’s timeline, though it makes minimal difference.
- Schwarzesmarken (Light Novel, Complete) – A spin-off of Alternative that follows at TSF squadron in East Germany in 1983, long prior to the events of Alternative.
- Berhard im Schatten (Light Novels, Complete) – Prequel to Schwarzesmarken following Irisdina and her brother Jurgen.
