Hyperdimension Neptunia anime

How Does The Hyperdimension Neptunia Manga Relate To The Games?

If Marvel hadn’t already laid claim on the trademark, Hyperdimension Neptunia should be subtitled as the Multiverse of Madness for as much as it uses dimensions to make every single game story and spin-off make sense because it takes place “in a new dimension” where any prior events don’t matter much.

It makes for confusing continuity, but no one really plays Hyperdimension Neptunia for the continuity. They play it for the meta jokes and maybe just a little bit for the wiafus.

Are The Hyperdimension Neptunia Manga/Light Novels Related to The Hyperdimension Neptunia Games/Anime?

Hyperdimension Neptunia has five manga/light novel series presently, and like the anime, none of them specifically adapt a particular game story since they are all often interconnected vaguely through the characters, but wholly new stories.

The TLDR of the Hyperdimension Neptunia manga/light novel situation is they are often fun fan service and not actual stories from the games or anime. However, unlike the games where you can just dive into almost any Hyperdimension Neptunia game after you have played the first game to get introduced to the characters, some manga/light novels are more related to the anime rather than the game. So you may see them reference that story instead of the game stories.

Hyperdimension Neptunia manga and light novels include:

  • Hyperdimension Neptunia: High School (Light Novel, Complete, 5 Novels)
  • Hyperdimension Neptunia: Megami Tsuushin (Manga, Complete, 43 Chapters)
  • Hyperdimension Neptunia: Hello New World (Manga, Complete, 14 Chapters)
  • Gakuen Game Neptune: Katsudou Diary (Manga, Complete, 3 Chapters)
  • Hyperdimension Neptunia TGS Hono no Futsukakan (Light Novel, Complete, 2 Novels?)

Hyperdimension Neptunia: High School

High School is a series of light novels that gathers the Hyperdimension Neptunia cast up in the same dimension and puts them in a high school setting for slice of life shenanigans.

While it is just a Hyperdimension Neptunia fan service series of light novels, it did end up inspiring the MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies spin-off game. The novels made the characters school girls, not goddesses, and the game returned their goddess powers, but kept the high school personas.

Gakuen Game Neptune: Katsudou Diary

Gakuen Game Neptune: Katsudou Diary is a manga that came after the MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies spin-off game which was inspired by the High School light novels. It isn’t an adaptation of the story, just random school life slice of life comedy.

Hyperdimension Neptunia: Megami Tsuushin

Megami Tsuushin rounds up characters from the various dimensions of the Neptunia franchise and puts them all in the same dimension. The manga is more of a comedic slice of life sort of fan service to fans of the franchise with minimal overall plot.

It takes place loosely after the first game, but isn’t adapting any specific story.

Hyperdimension Neptunia: Hello New World

Hello New World is much like the other manga – a gag manga. This time, they don’t even make an attempt at plot, but put all their effort into silly situations. The big difference is it is working more off the Hyperdimension Neptunia anime story rather than any of the games.

Hyperdimension Neptunia TGS Hono no Futsukakan

Like Hello New World, TGS Hono no Futsukakan is a spin-off novel of the anime story rather than any of the games. However, I couldn’t even begin to tell you what it is about as I couldn’t find it.

Going from the rest of the series, I can only assume that it is more unrelated fan service for the anime story, but I would happily be corrected by people who have read it.
