The Release That Witch anime is a pretty good adaptation of the web novel story, not really the manhua. The manhua has a lighter tone, though is still telling the same story. It’s not really as dark/grim as the novel or anime are, though.

That said, the anime also isn’t a perfect adaptation of the web novel either. They tend to leave out a lot of the internal monologue of various characters that really goes a long way to explain why they take certain actions. The anime also does re-arrange things, but the novel has multiple character focus, so that is to be expected.

You don’t need to read the web novel from the beginning after the anime, but you would get a lot of extra nuggets of information and world-building if you did.

Originally, Release That Witch was supposed to be 16 episodes. However, the company funding the production was upset that the anime used the novel’s darker tone rather than the light-hearted tone of the manhua, so funding was pulled.
