For stylistic and storytelling reasons, the Shiboyugi anime actually started by adapting Novel 2’s story and then adapted Novel 1 as the final few episodes.

The Shiboyugi anime does make a number of changes and omissions to the three games it depicts, but they don’t really alter the outcome. They were changes that helped flesh out characters and omissions that kind of cut out certain moments for other characters.

Do you need to read the Shiboyugi novels from the beginning because of those changes? No, but you would get a few extra tidbits and context if you did.
