In the end, it really actually wasn’t as complicated as all that. That’s what I took away from the original manga.

Where To Start The Ghost in the Shell Manga After The Anime?
When it comes to the Ghost in the Shell anime’s relationship to the manga, only two anime series even remotely tried to adapt the manga. Those being the original Ghost in the Shell (1995) movie and the sequel move, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004).
- The Ghost in the Shell (1995) movie adapts select chapters from the original Ghost in the Shell manga. Chapters skipped include 2, 4, 6, 7, and 12.
- Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004) adapts Chapter 6 from the original manga, but makes significant changes to it throughout.
As it skips much, you would want to read the original Ghost in the Shell manga by Shirow Masamune from the beginning. The original Ghost in the Shell manga is one volume, but it does have the one volume Human Error Processor sequel manga and the eight volume The Human Algorithm sequel manga series.
Please note that the Ghost in the Shell manga is actually quite different in tone from the anime. Expect the manga to be less serious with more occasional light-heartedness and to be far less philosophical about the setting. The Ghost in the Shell manga is still a serious story, but not nearly as serious as the anime makes it.
The rest of the Ghost in the Shell anime—Stand Alone Complex, SAC_2045, Arise, ect—are all unrelated to the original manga BUT some anime stories were adapted to manga.

- Ghost in the Shell:SAC by Kinutani Yuu adapts the anime story, but does expand on some of the stories in individual episodes.
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is a series for three light novels by Fujisaki Junichi that are just side stories set in the world.
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – The Laughing Man by Kinutani Yuu adapts the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – The Laughing Man (2005) anime.
- Ghost in the Shell – S.A.C. – Tachikoma na Hibi is a comedy manga set in the Stand Alone Complex setting.
- Ghost in the Shell Arise – Sleepless Eye by Fujisaki Junichi adapts the Arise OVAs.
Is The Ghost in the Shell Manga Over?
The Ghost in the Shell manga is complete.
- Ghost in the Shell ended in 1990 with Volume 1, Chapter 12.
- Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human Error Processor ended in 1996 with Volume 1, Chapter 7

Will There Be A Ghost in the Shell Season 2?
There is a new Ghost in the Shell anime project in the works that is allegedly based off the original manga. Perhaps adapting The Human Algorithm since it recently ended. It is currently set to air in July 2026.
