Where To Start The Rozen Maiden Manga After The Anime?
If you finished the Rozen Maiden anime and want to continue the story in the manga, you can start at:
- If you finished the Rozen Maiden (2004), Rozen Maiden: Traumend, and Ouverture anime – Read the Rozen Maiden manga from the beginning. The anime diverges early on.
- If you finished the Rozen Maiden (2013) anime – You can start the Rozen Maiden (2008) (AKA Rozen Maiden II) manga at Volume 5, Chapter 26.
The second half of Rozen Maiden (2013)’s final episode is from far later in the manga, and you should disregard it.
While most unofficial manga sites still keep the original Rozen Maiden manga and the Rozen Maiden II manga separated, the Collector’s Edition that is being released by official publishers lumped them together.
What to Expect From The Rozen Maiden Manga?
Rozen Maiden is a little complicated to get into at a glance, but I’ll try to break everything down so it makes sense.
Rozen Maiden 2004 does adapt the original Rozen Maiden manga in the first episode and keeps pieces in the following episodes, but mostly it diverges very early in the series. The Ouverture OVA and Traumend second season continue the divergence, becoming pretty much fully anime-original stories.
Rozen Maiden II manga, however, does get adapted more diligently by the 2013 anime. While the 2013 anime/Rozen Maiden II manga seems like an alternate universe take on the series, it is actually connected to the original manga later on.
Do you need to read the original Rozen Maiden manga to continue with the Rozen Maiden II manga after the 2013 anime? Not necessarily, but it definitely helps. You will essentially just understand some of the context around some events a little better. So, while recommended, it is not necessary to enjoy the story.
Is The Rozen Maiden Manga Over?
The original Rozen Maiden manga is complete. It ended in 2008 with Volume 8, Chapter 46.
The Rozen Maiden II/Rozen Maiden (2008) manga is also complete. It ended in 2014 with Volume 10, Chapter 68.
If you care about an obscure piece of manga history, the original Rozen Maiden manga was canceled by the publisher after a lengthy hiatus due to one of the members of the author duo, Peach-Pit, being hospitalized. The authors then got picked up by another publisher and started Rozen Maiden II as an alternate setting take on the original story, only to later connect it to the original by the end. It was a pretty cheeky way to side-step publisher ownership rights, which is why I wanted to mention it and it does explain why the manga is the way it is.
You can also enjoy various other Rozen Maiden stories, including:
- Rozen Maiden 0 (Complete, 4 Volumes, 25 Chapters) – A Prequel set in the Taisho era.
- Rozen Maiden: Dolls Talk (Complete, 3 Volumes) – A slice of life spin-off
- Maite wa Ikenai Rozen Maiden (Complete, 1 Volume, 12 Chapters) – A parody spin-off
- Die Romane der Rozen Maiden (Complete, 2 Light Novels) – Side stories set during the first manga.
Will There Be A Rozen Maiden Season 2?
While Rozen Maiden (2013) did seem to have a second season planned with the little taste it gave you of later events in the final episode, it seems hope of a Rozen Maiden Season 2 is dead at this point.
