What to Expect From The Water Magician Source Material Compared to The Anime?
As is very common with isekai anime, a lot of the actual world-building details in The Water Magician were either shaved off or rushed through. The anime had sort of a complicated pace where it went very fast at some parts (like the beginning, he spends like 20 years in those woods, by the way), and seemed to be padding others out as it got close to the end in order to get to the point it wanted to end at. What this does is make the anime feel more like an adventure series whereas The Water Magician light novel is more akin to fantasy isekai slice of life.
While nothing was skipped that would demand you absolutely need to read The Water Magician from the beginning, you would definitely get a lot more world-building if you do.
