If you were to judge from the anime alone,The Diary of a Crazed Family doesn’t have much of an overall plot outside of bizarre craziness, but that is actually quite untrue.

The reason you would need to read the light novel from the beginning is because The Diary of a Crazed Family shaved off the actual overarching plot of the novels so that each episode just sort of seems like mostly unrelated craziness. To be fair, the early light novels themselves are not so dense with plot, but by shaving it off completely in the anime, they really adapted quite far into the light novels without actually adapting the parts of actual story, just the crazy events that spawned from it.
