Everyone heaped praise on Food Wars for taking cooking and making it into what is very much a shounen action anime experience. However, it definitely wasn’t the first series to do that. It was just the first series to do it with actual cooking techniques and food – and more obvious ecchi.
Toriko is the real progenitor of turning food into a shounen action experience!
It’s a shame it wasn’t allowed to flourish like Food Wars was, though. But I guess some series must walk so others can run.

Where To Start The Toriko Manga After The Anime?
If you finished the Toriko anime and want to continue the story with the manga, you can start at, technically, Volume 30, Chapter 264.
Though that is not recommended. The long story is in the section below, but it would be better to start at Volume 24, Chapter 210, if not read the Toriko manga from the beginning.
What to Expect From The Toriko Manga?
The Toriko anime has some fundamental problems that made it hard to enjoy as an adaptation for many Toriko manga fans.
Unlike the usual shounen action anime adaptation problems from the time period, Toriko isn’t actually stuffed with too much filler content – though it does have some – but rather, the real problem with Toriko is censorship.
Toei made the Toriko anime something palatable for kids. It cut out all the smoking and drinking, which isn’t a huge issue, but it also cut out a lot of the more brutal violence as well. This means that if they didn’t think they could censor it good enough, the Toriko anime cut the fight/scene from the anime. This means you miss a few of the more cool fights.
It is the censorship that merits the recommendation to read Toriko from the beginning. However, if you don’t want to, it is strongly recommended to at least start the Toriko manga from Chapter 210 where the Cooking Festival Arc starts.
The Toriko anime went a bit rotten in the later half, but no episodes were quite as bad as its adaptation of the Cooking Festival Arc. They had known the anime was getting canned, did a terrible job adapting things, and veered off into filler for most of this arc including the ending.
Given how bad the last half of the Toriko anime was, there are also those who would recommend starting at Chapter 194 just so you can get a proper Four Beast Arc too.
Again, it really is just best to read the Toriko manga from the beginning if you enjoyed the series.
Is The Toriko Manga Over?
The Toriko manga is complete. It ended in 2016 with Volume 43, Chapter 396.
Will There Be More Toriko Anime?
The Toriko anime was ended around when the Toriko manga was rushed to a conclusion. The reason the manga ended was, allegedly, because it was getting less and less readership. So, unfortunately, I think Toriko’s time in the sun as both an anime and a manga is done.
