There are older anime series that you watch, and they just don’t hold up. However, there are some series that you can watch even 30 years later and still find to be excellent despite the old setting, old tropes, and old storytelling style. City Hunter is one of those series.
With the right mix of serious action and silly comedy, City Hunter is a series well past its time that manages to have a sizable fanbase still waiting for new media to come out.

Where To Start The City Hunter Manga After The Anime?
- If you watched City Hunter (1988) – You can start the manga at Volume 15, Chapter 63
- If you watched City Hunter 2 and City Hunter 3 – You can start the manga at Volume 23, Chapter 116
- If you watched City Hunter ’91 – You can start the manga at Volume 31, Chapter 169
City Hunter 2 and City Hunter 3 are combined because only two episodes of City Hunter 3 are adapting manga content, and those chapters are content that was before where City Hunter 2 ended in the manga.
The City Hunter movies and specials are all anime-original EXCEPT the most recent movie, City Hunter: Angel Dust (2023), which is a sequel to the City Hunter Shinjuku Private Eyes (2019), which was an anime-original movie. However, Angel Dust is loosely adapting the final arc of the manga. It is doing it in a mixed manga canon/filler sort of way, however. The movie adapts to around Chapter 178 with the mayor reveal, but the events are so wildly different that it really shouldn’t be considered an adaptation of the manga so much as it is kind of a re-imagining of the arc.
Angel Heart
Not to be confused with Angel Dust, the most recent City Hunter movie, Angel Heart is a spin-off series of City Hunter that uses the same characters, but takes place in an alternate universe. Angel Heart is also a more serious, grim story.
Angel Heart received an anime adaptation, and if you finished that, you can continue the Angel Heart manga at Volume 19, Chapter 199.
What to Expect From The City Hunter Manga?
As is common with older, long-running, often episodic series, the City Hunter anime comes with a tremendous amount of anime-original filler. What’s more, not only does City Hunter have a huge amount of filler, but it also skips a decent chunk of manga chapters throughout the anime as well.
If you have an interest in City Hunter, it is strongly recommended to read the manga from the beginning. However, in doing so, you will find that the manga story is, overall, a bit more serious than the anime. Almost all chapters always have those moments of Ryo being lecher to female clients and Kaori being mad about it, but the light-hearted comedy is, by comparison, a lot lower than you see in the anime since the anime often has more light-hearted filler episodes.
Like the City Hunter anime, the Angel Heart anime skips a lot of chapters and does injects its own filler episodes into the story as well. The Angel Heart manga is best read from the beginning too.
Is The City Hunter Manga Over?
The City Hunter manga is complete. It ended in 1991 with Volume 35, Chapter 191.
City Hunter Spin-offs
- City Hunter – XYZ (Manga, Complete, 1 Volume) – Collection of side stories in the City Hunter world. Some appeared in the anime.
- Angel Heart (Manga, Complete, 33 Volumes, 363 Chapters) – Uses the same characters, but is taking place in an alternate universe
- Angel Heart 2nd Season (Manga, Complete, 16 Volumes, 80 Chapters) – Continuation of Angel Heart after the original serialization magazine was discontinued.
- Kyou kara City Hunter (Manga, Ongoing) – About a woman isekai’d into City Hunter and trying to get hit on by Ryo.
- City Hunter Gaiden: Ijuuin Hayato-shi no Heion Naranu Nichijou (Manga, Ongoing) – Spin-off about Umibouzu’s cafe work.
Will There Be More City Hunter Anime?
There is no official news of new City Hunter anime content. However, as City Hunter Angel Dust did touch on the first part of the final arc of the manga, it would not be a surprise if they were to later announce a movie to handle the second part. However, that is purely speculation and has not even been rumored.
As Cat’s Eye, a manga series by the same author that also has character cameos in City Hunter, is getting a new anime in 2025, there is definitely still an interest in City Hunter and the type of story it tells.
Thanks a lot for this
