Planetes has long been considered a great anime for its initially sci-fi space slice of adult life plot that shifts into a deeper tale of intrigue. The Planetes manga has also been considered a pretty great series to read, too.
While both series are good, they aren’t as similar as some might expect.

Where To Start The Planetes Manga After The Anime?
It is best to consider the Planetes anime and the manga to be two different products. If you enjoyed the Planetes anime, do consider reading the manga, but go in expecting the first half of the anime, and not so much the second half where it became about the terrorist plot.
The Planetes anime was being produced before the manga even had an ending, so the anime just sort of made one. However, the ending the anime made proved to do the impossible – be far and wide better than the ending the manga has, if only because it grew so much larger and complex in scope.
Whereas the Planetes anime starts in a very slice of life way and becomes more about political intrigue. The Planetes manga, on the other hand, is slice of life throughout and focuses more intimately on things the anime only touched on, like the personal issues of the much more compact cast of characters that you see in the beginning on the anime.
If you read the Planetes manga after watching the Planetes anime, expect to see familiar events that the anime presented, but often presented in a different order. By the time you get to Volume 4 (Chapter 17 through Chapter 26), that is when you will fully see new content in the story. So if you just want to see how Planetes ends in the manga compared to the anime, you can read those chapters, but it might be best to read the manga from the beginning so you can experience the story as it was meant to be read.
Is The Planetes Manga Over?
The Planetes manga is complete. It ended in 2004 with Chapter 26.
