Is The Steins;Gate Anime Like The Game?

Steins;Gate and its Butterfly Effect time travel story was nothing short of a phenomenon when the anime aired in 2011. However, Steins;Gate originally began life as a visual novel. What’s more, it also spawns from an often overlooked extended universe that has amassed a tidy amount of other series.

Is The Steins;Gate Anime Like The Game?

The Steins;Gate anime was adapted from a visual novel, which means that since the fleshed out story was the selling point of the visual novels, it transferred rather easily to anime. There is minimal gameplay in visual novels, so very few changes needed to be made to adapt it to anime storytelling.

That said, the visual novels for Steins;Gate and its alternate version Steins;Gate 0 do have a lot more details than the anime. They also feature multiple routes to explore, some of which the anime never touched on.

This means there is some value to Steins;Gate anime-only fans playing the Steins;Gate visual novels.

Steins;Gate visual novel games include:

  • Steins;Gate
  • Steins;Gate 0
  • Steins;Gate Elite – Remastered version of the original Steins;Gate that is fully animated, but also cuts quite a bit from the original visual novel story.
  • Steins;Gate: Linear Bounded Phenogram – A visual novel of 11 Steins; Gate side stories
  • Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace – Dating sim visual novel with Steins;Gate characters.
  • Steins;Gate: Variant Space Octet – Takes place after the true ending, but is an 8-bit text adventure game.
  • Steins;???? – An unreleased upcoming Steins;Gate visual novel title.

As one finale note, the Steins;Gate movie, Load Region of Deja Vu, is a sequel to the anime and visual novel story, but is wholly an anime-original story.

Science Adventure – The Extended Universe That Steins;Gate is Part Of

You know how sometimes you see an anime with an odd semicolon and maybe wonder if it is related to Steins;Gate? Well, as it turns out, they actually are related to Steins;Gate! Those semicolon-laden anime titles are part of the Science Adventure extended universe of visual novels, many of which got anime adaptations.

Science Adventure visual novels with anime adaptations include:

  • Chaos;Head
  • Steins;Gate
  • Robotic;Notes
  • Chaos;Child
  • Occultic;Nine – This was originally a light novel series that gained a visual novel and anime adaptation later. The light novel is still considered the most detail-rich and best story experience.

Science Adventure visual novels with no anime adaptations:

  • Anonymous;Code
  • Steins;???? – An unreleased upcoming Steins;Gate visual novel title.

Please note that, outside of Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0, the other anime adaptations of Science Adventure series are considered to be quite poor quality. Chaos;Head and Chaos;Child being the worst of the lot.

How Are Science Adventure Series Connected?

The Science Adventure series was all planned out as an extended visual novel world by Chiyomaru Shikura. This means that every title takes place in the same universe and the story of one series may affect events in the story of another.

While Steins;Gate does have some very small nods to Chaos;Head, the series are all otherwise unrelated. Exceptions are made for Steins;Gate and the related Steins;Gate 0 as well as Chaos;Head and Chaos;Child.

While Chaos;Child was created to be enjoyed without knowledge of Chaos;Head, it makes strong references to Chaos;Head and knowing the story of Chaos;Head makes the story of Chaos;Child a little easier to understand.
